磯山椒枝條頂端的葉片光滑亮澤，形狀獨特。來自日本的它之所以得名磯山椒，是因為其葉片酷似著名的香料「山椒」（日本胡椒）。它也會開出形狀像梅花的花朵，這些花朵美麗夢幻，被譽為「天上繁星般的梅花」。因此，它也被稱為「天之梅」。
磯山椒也是臺灣原生樹種，稱為「小石積」，因此非常適應炎熱的氣候，適合新手種植。
